Vinted vs eBay vs Depop: which fees actually eat your profit?

Every reseller has had the moment: the sale notification feels great, and then the payout lands and it's quietly $6 lighter than you expected. That gap is fees — and every platform structures them differently, which makes it hard to compare your actual margin across the apps you sell on.

Why the comparison is harder than it looks

It's not just that fee percentages differ. Some platforms charge the buyer, some charge the seller, some bundle a payment processing fee on top of a selling fee, and postage is sometimes rolled into the sale price and sometimes charged separately. Two items that sell for the same price on two different platforms can net you very different amounts.

Platforms also change their fee structures more often than most sellers check — a rate that applied last spring may not apply today. Rather than publish specific percentages here that could be out of date by the time you read this, the more useful habit is knowing exactly where to look before you price something, and re-checking each platform's current seller fee page every few months.

Where the maths actually goes wrong

The most common mistake isn't misunderstanding a fee — it's forgetting to subtract it before deciding whether a sale was worth your time. If you priced an item assuming you'd keep the full sale price, and the fee only shows up on your payout, you've quietly been running some listings at a loss without noticing.

The second most common mistake is postage. If you offer "free" postage and absorb the cost, that's a real cost against your margin — even though it never appears as a line item labelled "fee."

A simple habit that fixes this

Before you list anything, work out your price floor: item cost, plus the platform's fee at your expected sale price, plus postage and packaging, plus whatever minimum profit makes the listing worth your time. If your intended list price doesn't clear that floor with room to spare, either raise the price or don't list it on that platform.

This is exactly the calculation Netted automates per platform, so you're not redoing this maths by hand every time you list something.
